Show me that smile again...

Hi lovely ladies! I hope you’ve all had a relaxing weekend! I can’t believe it’s over already…at least we’re that much closer to spring break! (By the way, are there any bloggies near Santa Barbara, CA who would like to do a meet-up? I’ll be there for a few days during my spring break in March!)

Last night after posting I went over to Jillian’s apartment. We watched old episodes of Growing Pains (hence the title) with her roomies…anyone remember that show? I’d forgotten my hubs Leo was in it once upon a time. He was 16 and looks like a baby! We also made some pancakes, which I topped with PB…yummy! It was a nice, relaxed way to spend the evening. Even though it wasn’t too cold, I hate venturing out in dressy clothes when it’s chilly!

This morning’s breakfast was a bowl of Simply Fiber, Kashi GoLean and Arrowhead Mills spelt flakes with raspberries and almond milk in my new Progresso mug. I love this bowl already!

A little later, I went to the gym for some weights. As I start running longer distance, I’m trying to balance out the cardio with more strength- I want to give my knees plenty of rest between runs! I followed Gina’s Winter Shape Up plan again:

-10 minute walking warmup on the treadmill at 4 mph
-10 dumbbell frontal raises (7.5 lb weights)
-15 plie squats (10 lb weights)
-25 medicine ball twists on each side (14 lb ball)
-10 hammer curls on each arm (10 lb weights)
-15 good mornings (14 lb ball)
-25 bent knee leg raises
-50 bicycle crunches
-50 crunches on each side
-1 minute plank
            Repeated x3

I left the gym sweaty and tired...strength training takes it out of you, but in a completely different way from running! For one thing, it leaves me far hungrier. Enter: apple oats for lunch.

¼ c steel cut oats, 1 c almond milk, half a Fuji apple, Maranatha almond butter, Ezekiel Golden Flax cereal, cake spice and cinnamon. I remembered to add some chia seeds after the pic! Plus a side salad of arugula and a HUGE sliced cucumber with a drizzle of balsamic and EVOO, and the remainder of my apple

I just love oats for lunch after a workout. They’re so filling and feel rewarding! After lunch, I wasted time for awhile before finally heading out to do some errands. It was gorgeous today! It felt like spring was coming as I walked around the city. I made a quick trip to the health food store to restock my produce, and picked up this little guy for my afternoon snackie:

I’ve never tried goat’s cheese yogurt despite loving the cheese, and it didn’t disappoint, but in all honesty, it made me realize how little I miss dairy since cutting back my intake! I can’t claim to be a vegan, since I still eat animal products when I’m eating out, but I’ve made an effort to cut back my dairy consumption lately for a combination of reasons. Personal preference, treatment of farm animals and health-related arguments all play a role in this decision. I realize that it’s hypocritical of me to list animal treatment as a reason if I continue to consume animal products on occasion, but I think that every little bit counts! Furthermore, I’m not against animal products per se; rather, I think that they should be treated humanely in food production, which they sadly are often not. Therefore, while I’ll continue to eat purely pescatarian at restaurants or in others’ homes, I’m happy with my largely vegan diet at home.

Other afternoon snacks included this olade drink I bought on a whim at the health food store, and a banana with AB:

I’d never seen this lemonade before, but it was actually delicious! The perfect combination of lemon and strawberry, without being too sweet.

A few hours later I threw together a quick and easy din:

Arugula, tomato and two Dr. Praeger’s Texmex burgers on an Ezekiel tortilla with humnut sauce; salsa for dipping the tortilla remnants

Delicious. Not only do I love Dr. Praeger’s, but these days I could devour just about anything topped with humnut! For dessert, I had an unpictured apple with AB for dipping…I think y’all know the drill on that one J

I’m currently snacking on some organic raisins and will probably break into the cereal stash soon. I’ve got a lot of reading to do tonight, and snacks always help! Have a great night chicas!

What’s your favorite 90’s show or sitcom? Boy Meets World is definitely my #1, but Growing Pains is a close second!
What’s your favorite post-workout meal? As I said, I love oats!

Oh man...too many to choose from in 90s sitcoms! And the Growing Pains theme song is totally on my running playlist.

I liked the more obscure shows, like My Two Dads and Just The Ten of Us.

The guy who played "Boner" from Growing Pains is missing!! Just heard about that one today.

Love that Leo was on that show. haha

The eats look fab!

I like your food philosophy - I am mostly a vegetarian at home - but there are those times when I'm with family or at restaurants that it's okay with me to eat meat.

I loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Favorite post-workout meal - nut butter and fruit or toast.

You def. don't need a lable & you're right- every little bit counts! I wish I could understand those strength moves but you lost me at hammer curls lol

I also loved Boy Meets World :D Eric always cracked me up...

I like to mush a banana in a bowl with a tablespoon of peanut butter and toss it in the microwave for 30 second or so. It's like a warm banana pudding. You should try it.

Question: how do you do "good mornings" with a medicine ball?

Jessica @ The Process of Healing said...

Oh girl I LOVED Growing Pains.. and Boy Meets World!!! Good times :)

Your oats sound great, I haven't had apples in my oats in a while. Goats milk yogurt... interesting!

And you're right about every little bit counts. I hate the way animals are treated but I still eat meat and dairy.. but I've cut way back on meat. And I don't feel "guilty" for not going all the way.

Post workout meal... pb & j!

I have to agree - nothing beats a bowl (or mug:) of oats after a workout! Your mix looks delish.

My fave sitcom from the 90's has to be Friends, but I also have fond memories of Fresh Prince and of course Topanga and crew on Boy Meets World!

I'm with you on not venturing outside in cute, not so warm clothing in the winter. This weekend I managed to lure people to my house so that I could have fun without risking life and limb on the icy sidewalks. It was so nice to wear nice shoes for once!

I loved Boy Meets World!! I actually got to see it get taped waaaay back in the day--my Dad's cousin filmed it, so he got us in! It was so fun, I got to meet a bunch of the cast, got Danielle Fishell's autograph and Ben Savage filled in for the comedian hosting the audience... hahha good times :D

I agree, I'm almost-vegan except like you, I eat fish and occasional dairy.. and I don't really miss it! It's funny, I think your tastes for things can just change. Like humnut... that's something a few years ago I NEVER would have liked and now I lurve. :]

Naomi(Onefitfoodie) said...

hey girl! first time in yourblog, love it:) katie said your humnut sauce was awesome, so I had to come check it out here :)

fav 90's show def fresh prince and full house! I still watch reruns LOL

great food philisophy, it gives you some wiggle room, but still sticking to what you believe in!!

fav post workout meal? that would be a protein berry smoothie OR greek yog with diced apple and cinnamon!

I'm the same way with my animal product eating. I hardly ever eat meat unless I go out and see a meat dish that sounds really good. You shouldn't have to justify your choices - I don't think it makes you sound hypocritical at all! My favorite sitcom from the 90s was Saved by the Bell...haha I STILL watch it whenever I catch reruns. Kelly was my hero :-) Have a great week, sweetie!

Abby (Abbys Vegan Eats) said...

Um can we eat any more similar.. love your eats, girl!! :) Im so glad someone else embraces Ezekiels like myself!

I was a huge Full House fan.. I wanted to be Stephanie Tanner more than anything. lol

Andrea @ CanYouStayForDinner.com said...

Mmmm, I love Dr. Praeger's! And Boy Meets World was so so good. But I'd have to say that my favorite is Saved By the Bell. I watch it now and cringe at how bad it was, but so good at the time! Oh God, and Full House!!
Post workout I really love a huge salad. The bigger the better!

Hey girl! Oh I hear ya! I am a cardio fantatic but I just started on some really hard circuit training and Im exhausted and hungry! And you are right, it wears you out but in a totally different way though. Feels amazing! My favorite 90s sitcom had to be 90210. LOL. My favorite post workout meal is oats too! Although I mix mine with greek yogurt. So creamy and some extra protein! Have a rockin day girl!

And it's been sooooo long since I watched Growing Pains and Boy Meets World! Gosh, that takes me back to high school. Oh, how simple life was then...

Thanks for the blog compliments! I'm loving your blog, too!

My favorite post hard workout fuel is any food period. Seriously. I just need food fast lest I start grazing on anything in sight! My favorite 90s TV show was Sabrina the Teenage Witch but Boy Meets World is definitely a close second.

Therese said...

OMG I used to watch Boy Meets World constantly. The weird thing is I don't think I really even LOVED the show, but it was just always on lol!

Goats milk yogurt...hmmm sounds interesting! I would stick to the cheese I think.

La said...

BOY MEETS WORLD!! Number one favorite, 100%! I still cry when I watch the episode where Topanga runs away from her parents to be with Cory!

I totally feel you on the animal products thing...I'm not 100% conscious about it when I go out to eat based on convenience but in the house I try to stick to strictly vegan.

Seriously I'm going to email you later and we'll plan a meetup! It'll be my first :)

Andrea @Celery In The City said...

love seeing that someone else eats cucumbers as if they were chips! cucumbers are my FAVE lunch side. post workout..I always want a banana, I'm assuming my body wants potassium?

My favorite 80/90s show is definitely punky brewster. Hands down.

Heyyyy chica :) :)

I also loooove a good post-workout meal, esp after lifting! My favorite is a whey protein smoothie or salad topped with some sort of protein and healthy fat (EVOO salad dressing!)

Glad you had a good weekend, even if you stayed in cause of the cold. I love girls nights! My favorite 90s shows are Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step and Sister Sister...LOL

Have a great week!!! xoxoxox
