Hello lovelies! Hope you’re all enjoying your Saturdays and doing something more exciting than I am…the past 24 hours have been super busy but super fun, so I’m staying in tonight and catching up on some homework!
Yesterday started off with a bowl of Fiber One with fresh raspberries and almond milk:
I was planning on going for a run, but the drizzly and windy conditions made it difficult to motivate myself. Instead, I went to the gym and did 4 miles on the treadmill, followed by stretching and ab work. I came home and refueled with a plethora of fruit and veg:
Steamed broc, cauliflower, zucchini, broccoli and carrots topped with nooch and a Dr. Praeger’s California burger topped with mustard; apple and banana
I was a little lazy with pictures this weekend, but for an afternoon snack I had another apple and some protein cookie dough before going to Penn Station to pick up my friend Mikey, who came to visit Mike and I last night! We started off our evening of debauchery with edamame, yellowtail ceviche and sashimi at Sushi Samba, all with a pitcher of mojitos:
Afterwards, we headed to Magnolia Bakery for some dessert. I chose an incredible red velvet cupcake- just check out the blood red color on this sucker!!
The rest of the night was full of food and drink. We first made a stop at a German beer hall, where I had a salad plate of stringbean, tomato, cucumber, cabbage and onion salads with sauerkraut and a pickle, in order to get me through a few heavy-duty beers. We also all split a piping hot soft pretzel:
Since last call was at 11:30, we decided to peace out of there and head back to Sushi Samba for awhile. I stuck to water while there, but somehow Mikey finagled a chocolate banana cake out of our cocktail waitress, and I couldn’t resist a few bites:
I finally fell into bed around 2:30, super late for me! I had a massive food baby, but it was totally worth it. It might not be the healthiest thing to do, but every once in awhile some drunken foodfests are just necessary. It’s part of college, right J
This morning I woke up to another cereal bowl- Fiber One with a sliced banana and almond milk:
I snacked on an unpictured apple before going to a blogger meet up at Sigri, a Sri Lankan restaurant in the East Village. I met Maya from American Gourmande, Becka from Beek Eats, and Leslie from The Whole Plate for a totally new to us experience! We each selected one dish to share:
Devilled prawns tossed with sautéed onions, capsicums and Sri Lankan spices
Fish curry in a coconut milk sauce with a blend of herbs and spices
Kotthu roti, a doughy pancake chopped into shreds, stir fried with vegetables and egg
Lentil curry and red rice
It was all delicious and very unique! My favorite was the prawn dish, which was awesome but SPICY! I needed a lot of rice to wash that stuff down J Afterwards, we strolled around the East Village for a bit and made a dessert stop at Lula’s Sweet Apothecary, a totally vegan ice cream shop!
I chose the cake batter soft serve with rainbow sprinkles, which was out of this world. I’m pretty new to the realm of non dairy ice cream, but I could tell that this was as good as it gets! Thank you so much to Maya, Becka and Leslie for such a great meet up- it was wonderful to meet them!
Mike and I were planning on going for a run early tomorrow morning, but he’s come down with a horrible cough and wanted to postpone it until the afternoon to see if it gets better. I decided to take advantage of the night alone and get some things done! In the midst of doing homework, I was a bad food blogger didn’t take pictures of my eats. They were boring, and I just wasn’t feeling breaking out the camera in front of my roommate’s dinner party! I enjoyed some of the leftover roti and red rice, spiced up with some steamed veggies and nooch, plus an apple with sunflower seed butter. I needed something clean, after last night’s sugar fest!
Well bloggies, I’m off. My eyes are already heavy, and it’s only 9:30! Hopefully I can hold out for some laundry and reading. Have a great Sunday loves!!
What’s your favorite kind of ethnic food? I was on a roll this weekend with Japanese, German and Sri Lankan, but I think my favorite is either Italian or French!

that vegan icecream loooks deliishhh! what was it made with- soy milk?
i wonder if you can make icecream out of almond milk. a "lighter" option per se- including a cup of almond milk is like, what, 40 calories? blasphemy!!

A vegan ice cream shop?! Can someone open one around here?? K great :)
Drunken foodfests are definitely part of college haha except while my roomies are gorging on pizza, I'm gorging on raw cheezecake. Same concept...haha
My favorite ethnic food would probably be Mediterranean!
I love japanese, but when the craving hits nothing beats Mexican! And I completely agree drunken food fests are definitely a part of college, enjoy them!
Have a great Sunday dear!
I honestly am not sure if I could pick just one ethnic food to be my favourite- I love them all! I have had the chance to have quite a little variety of ethnic foods from 'authentic' chefs and they are all just SO wonderful. I am very pleased, however, with japanese (sushi!) and french for seeming so light, yet filling all at the same time!
I feel silly for being so tired at 10pm on a Saturday night, too, but what can one do, eh?
:)
thanks for the entries and your awesome comments, as always :)
Beek and Maya..wow, how awesome! I dont "know" the other girl but what a fun time! I have met Bekah before in Phx before she left for NYC! We did yoga together and then met up w/ my other friend madeline. Anyway what a great time you all must have had!
And the sushi looks like works of art! Wow!!
HOly food! Sushi Samba = unique and delicious! Never heard of Cake Batter soft serve - only the real stuff from Cold Stone. That is one big cup of ice cream!
I totally agree about the late-night drinking and eating thing. Some times it's nice to just throw your hands up and say i'm living in the moment enjoying friends and having fun... including cupcakes beer etc etc.. plus you seem to have a good balance!
Fav ethnic food? Man that's a hard one! I lurrrrrve sushi of course, but I also love middle eastern like falafal and humus and baba ganoush. Love, love indian too. Not a huge mexican or italian fan but occasional if the mood strikes me.
Good for you for doing the homework thang ;) I did some of that today too (studying mostly) but need to do more!
Night girl!
OMG yummy food!!! I LOVE Indian food, like I'm obsessed! And isn't cake batter fro yo like the most amazing flavor? I get it allll the time! Can't live without my fro yo haha ;)
Hope you are having a fabulous weekend!!
Hello love!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What amazing food you have eaten this weekend!!!! I had Indian Food for the first time Friday night!!!! It wasnt your basic Indian Food, it was more like fine dining Indian, Mike took me to a great place for my Birthday!! I loved the Naan!! THat bread is addicting!!!!!
Loving the red velvet cupcake, that looks so good!!! You are NOT a bad food blogger, sometimes its hard to take pics all the time and especailly when your out with friends and just want to enjoy!!!
Loving the vegan icecream place too!! How cool!! THe cake batter sounds yum!!!!
Have a great Sunday love and I hope you get all your homework done!!! xoxoxo
It was rainy and windy and cold here yesterday too - hard to motivate myself to go outside when it's like that too. Today it's just cold I think I'll bundle up and go for a run.
All that food looks amazing! I love Indian, Thai, Japanese, and Ethiopian. I'd love to try real French food or Sri Lankan! New York has everything! :) The cupcake and ice cream look delicious! I would love to go to a vegan ice creamery!
xoxoxoxo
I think I chinese would be my favorite, I love chow mein!
That is the deepest red cupcake I have seen haha.
That sushi looks amazing!! And that cupcake...swoon!!!
I'd say either Italian or Indian :-)
Sounds like some spectacular eats and new friends! Yay! I had a "college student sugar fest" yesterady too; it's actually funny how much my body craves fruits and veggies the day afterwards though!
I love most types of ethnic food besides Chinese. My favorites are Middle Eastern, Indian, and Thai!
Happy Sunday Gabriela!!!
Wow, you managed to hit up all of the most amazing places in one weekend! Major props. Samba is sooo wonderful--when I was like seventeen, a few of my friends and I snuck in with fakes and hung out at the bar. So BA, I know. Can't wait until I'm 21 and can actually just waltz in without the adrenaline rush!
I love French and Italian, but since it's such standard fare at my house I can't consider it ethnic. I would have to say the simple, clean flavors of Japanese cuisine, or Ethiopian.
Oh man, so much good food in this post! First the veggie lunch, then the cupcake, then the ice cream?? Yum!!
Wait....my favorite ice cream flavor comes in SOFT SERVE form now?! Must. find. STAT....
My favorite ethnic food? Oh gosh, I love it all! I'd have to say Mexican is probably my favorite, followed by Japanese and Italian. There are so many others that I've yet to try. For instance (I feel like a loser admitting this for some reason, haha) I've NEVER had Thai food!
Gabriela you are my idol, love! I can't believe how many delicious things you've eaten in the past few days, I am so jealous! The food looked divine but the desserts really got me- the red velvet cupcake, the vegan froyo, and the choc banana cake!! Out of this world. I really really love how adventurous you are with your meals. You seem to really find a beautiful balance between eating what you love and crave and healthy nutrition. THey aren't mutually exclusive and you've proven that! Thanks for always inspiring me!
i want to eat your post.
It sounds like you had one amazing weekend girl!!!! Nights like friday night are TOTALLY necessary every once in a while, good for the soul! The red velvet cupcake looks amazingly delicious too, I love love love red velvet.
You were on a roll with ethnic food!!! NYC has about every ethnic food out there I'm sure :) My favorite is Italian but I also love sushi.. so it's a toss up! But I also love Thai...
I've never had vegan ice cream but you can't go wrong with cake batter flavored anything, that's for sure!!!
Hope you are having a great Sunday love!
Well it totally sounds like you had an amazing foodie week-end!!! It all looks so delicious! And I totally envy you for being able to go to Magnolia that easily (for me, it would take an 8 hour drive ;) )
You definitely went all around the world this weekend :) I am pretty sure that I lived in India in my past life... or maybe Spain. I am a sucker for spicy food and tapas!
So jealous that you have the deliciousness that is Magnolia's bakery around the corner from you! When I went to the city this fall, I bought about 4 different cupcakes and took them on my flight back to Charlotte with me.. they only got a little smooshed ;)
Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend! xoxo
Oh yum, everything looks so good! Where do I start? Let's start with that red velvet cupcake, shall we... omg, looks so divine!! And your cake batter soft serve looks quite heavenly as well. Looks like a fun time!!
My favorite kind of ethnic food would have to be mexican!!
Hi doll,
Looove trying different kinds of ethnic foods! I've recently been on an Indian kick. I tried Ethipoean recently and its soooo good! AND you eat with your hands, lol. How could you beat that??? haha
Have a great Sunday love!
xx,
Lauren
That sushi plate is so beautiful! What an ethnic weekend :-) I've been loving Thai food lately, but I really like all food, so I'm always looking to try new types of foods. Also, I want some of that vegan ice cream soooo badly. My tummy and I would LOVE it.
Yeah! You seriously had a million different ethnicities of food! Way to go :) My fave is probably Japanese because when it's good sushi, I could probably eat it every day. When it's just "OK" though, I'd prefer Italian I think. You cant go wrong with some pasta and EVOO or tomato sauce!
Ah, Sushi love!
Your bowls of cereal always look SO good by the way. You may just be the reason I decided to FINALLY buy some :)
GREAT WEEKEND!! Sounds like you had some good food and mojitos (yum.. I love love Mojitos). Love the indulgences and that you were able to fit in a run & homework time. That is such a great balance!
Like I said gotta to live a little sometimes!!!
You were quite the globe trotter! Everything looks amazing - I'm especially intrigued by the Sri Lankan meal. The roti with egg looks to die for.
It sounds like you had a balanced weekend of food, fun, and a dash of work. Could you send some of that balance my way? Haha, I kid I kid!
Have a good night dearie!
YES! Someone else stayed in on Saturday night. ;)
I'm such an ethnic food virgin! There's so much I HAVEN'T tried. When I move back to the city, trying different cuisines will be high on my priority list. (Not a lot to choose from in small town Indiana.)
What is Sri Lanken food like? I need to read your blog more so I can be more cultured. My meals are all the same and all bland!
Katherine
Gabriella!
What a fun day right? I'm so happy to have met you, you seem like such a fun, sweet girl! I will definitely be hitting your blog up more often, as well as maybe another lunch date next time I'm in the city!
Great recap too- do you mind sending me the actual photo via email of Maya, myself and Leslie? We didn't take too many of our actual faces. Haha. Bekahroberts1@gmail.com
Thanks my dear!
oh, gabriela with one L. oops!
oh girl if I could tell you my college day eat and drinks, I was far from perfect....your night sound fun!
And that Kotthu roti sounds amazing!!
It was a pleasure to meet you! The picture you took in Lula's is adorable! I love. Glad you enjoyed the leftover Sri Lankan food! Hope to see you again in the city sometime soon.
