Liberty & Ellis

I've lived in New York City for nearly two years now, so it's kind of crazy that I haven't gone to any of the big tourist attractions- Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building, Ellis Island- since moving here. I visited them all as a kid, but it's undoubtedly different to see them as an adult. Today, Chelsey and I decided to venture over to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island for some sightseeing!

After getting slightly lost on our way downtown, we eventually made it to Battery Park to catch our ferry.

It was a beautiful yet sweltering day, which meant a long line and a packed ferry.

For the record, tourists can get kind of crazy. Trying to get a good shot of Lady Liberty was like trying to get a picture of Lady Gaga.

We didn't realize that you needed tickets to go into the statue, so we ended up just meandering around Liberty Island for awhile taking pictures. The views of the city skyline are gorgeous, stretching from Hoboken to Brooklyn.

Next, we boarded a ferry over to Ellis Island, where we spent a long time wandering around the exhibits.

The last time I was here was on a class trip in fifth grade, and I remember thinking it was horrendously boring. Amazing what eleven years can do, because today I thought it was really interesting!

We ended our trip with a visit to the Wall of Honor, where the names of every immigrant to pass through Ellis Island are engraved.

I didn't find any direct relatives that I know of, but it's fun to look for your last name on the dozens of panels.

By the time our ferry docked in Manhattan, it was nearly 3 pm and we were starving. I'd had an apple and a chocolate Raw Crunch bar that Chelsey gave me as snacks...

But all we wanted were massive salads for lunch. We headed straight to the salad bar mecca: Whole Foods.

I filled a container with $13.22 worth of vegetables and other stuff. Glorious. (Chelsey's cashier was clueless and somehow only charged her for about $5 of a salad the size of mine. Not fair.)

Tomatoes, red peppers, steamed kale, zucchini, shredded beets, broccoli, gazpacho salad, baked tofu, tuna, salmon and roasted cauliflower, all topped with red wine vinegar and oil.

I literally hoovered this thing, telling Chelsey in between stuffed mouthfuls that I needed to slow down. Ha.

Now, we're just hanging out at my place for awhile and eating dark chocolate before our dinner reservation tonight. Hint: I'm going to get to have my favorite dessert ever ever ever.
