Terrific Ten!

Ay bloggies! I can’t believe it’s Sunday night already. Whereee does the weekend go?! Last night after posting I went to a friend’s apartment to celebrate Molly’s birthday. We had plans to eat out at a Mexican place and then go to a bar, but there was a ridiculous wait at the restaurant so we ended up ordering takeout instead. I had three veggie fajitas with mountains of salsa, guacamole and jalapeño peppers, plus my weight in homemade tortilla chips. So. Freaking. Good. Afterwards, we just hung out, made margaritas and danced like crazy people to Beatles music. I only had one “birthday drink”, in preparation for today’s run, but it might have been more fun to be hyper than drunk J It reminded me of being a kid. The only damper of the night came when I left to go home. I swear, there were NO EMPTY CABS on the entire island of Manhattan. Mike made sure I got home safe, but a half hour trek in four inch heels is never fun!

This morning I woke up surprisingly early for having gone to bed at nearly three, and had my favorite breakfast:

Nature’s Path SmartBran + frozen blobs + almond milk, topped with cinnamon

I got on a roll with homework and didn’t end up making it to the gym until pretty late in the morning, so I had a snack before I left to fuel me through my run:

Toasted Nuts and Cranberry Luna bar

My run went great! I thought I would be dying of boredom by the end of 10 miles on a treadmill, but a combination of Lil Wayne, DJ Earworm, the Olympics and a book for class on my iPod got me through it pretty painlessly. I tried to take it pretty slow, finishing in 1:27:55, roughly a 8:48 minute mile average. It felt great to do my longest run to date!

I came home HANGRY and decided to make a MONSTROUS bowl of oats to refuel. This puppy was DENSE! Before I left I’d mixed 2 T chia seeds with ½ c almond milk, then left it in the fridge to gelatinize. The result:

Pure, chia pudding goodness

I also added some Vega vanilla flavored Whole Food Health Optimizer to my oats while they were cooking:

The result?

½ c steel cut oats, 1 c almond milk, Vega packet, chia pudding, sliced banana, 2 spoonfuls of Naturally More and a large handful of Ezekiel Golden Flax cereal

Maybe it was the fact that I was so hungry, but these were hands down some of the best oats I’ve ever made. The picture doesn’t do them justice- they were super filling! I also had a sliced apple:

I spend the whole afternoon working on an outline of Parisian history for one of my classes. Talk about painful! My oats did an awesome job of keeping me full, but I knew I needed to keep refueling, so I had some baby carrots and Mary’s Crack with hummus:

Went back for seconds (and thirds) on the hummus. Portion control containers are great, but not for dipping endless supplies of snacks!

For dinner, I had a serious veg craving. I made a massive salad beast:

Spinach, tomato, zucchini and Brussels roasted in EVOO and sea salt, green olives, half a block of Lightlife soy tempeh, all topped with EVOO and red wine vinegar, plus nooch after the photo was taken (can’t believe I almost forgot it!)

This was another super-filling meal! I had a slice of toasted Ezekiel bread on the side for carbs, and an apple with Once Again sunflower seed butter for dessert:

After dinner, I stopped by my friend Zoe’s to say hi….it’s been awhile since I’ve seen her! We chatted for awhile while snacking on some of her mom’s amazing homemade granola with almonds. I came home and had another snack:

So Delicious Coconut Milk Blueberry yogurt

I was very pleasantly surprised by this yogurt! It tasted almost like a regular blueberry yogurt, but a bit lighter. The ingredients list isn’t great, and it has a lot of sugar, but it’s definitely a nice replacement!

Alright mes belles, that’s it for tonight…I’ve gotta buckle down and get some reading done! Have an awesome Monday!

What’s your favorite way to pass the time while working out? I’m definitely an iPod girl, though sometimes I wish I could learn to enjoy exercising without it!

I can't listen to music while I run, not really sure why though. If I'm on the treadmill I'll usually either read or watch TV.
Good luck studying/reading, I have TONS of work this week too. Its not going to be very fun.

Have a great monday!

I am obsessed with Chia - your oats look delish.

10 miles on the treadmill is beyond impressive!! Do you vary the speed/incline or do a steady run?

What a great run! Congrats!... You've reminded me of my luna bar love and I tried the vanilla almond one the other day. It tasted like birthday cake!!
I love the texture of chia seeds in oatmeal. It's like a cross between caviar and...I'm not sure what, but it's good!

I usually watch tv at the gym. I also wish I could enjoy exercise without listening/watching something. But when walking around and strength training, my little clip-on ipod shuffle is a life saver.

Thnx for the falafel idea, that sounds so good! I need to try the chia pudding too, I've put them in overnight oats and love it :) Have a great start to the week girl!

as for music I download mixes from beezo (http://www.beezo.net/home.php). they're free and some of them are dece - just look for the ones that are the most popular.

Watching reality TV is the best way to pass time while on the dreadmill or any of the other cardio machines.

And I wish I could run even ONE mile. Nice work.

the vega. ok. so i have tried other flavors of it and i can't get into it. the hemp/pea protein is too gritty for me. maybe i need your flavor!

the brand of sunbutter, off to see what that;s all about! i use TJs b/c i love it and it's cheap relatively speaking.

working out. i like pure silence. it's the only quiet thoughts i get most days :)

If I'm at the gym, I absolutely have to be listening to music to keep going. If I'm running outside, though, I could go forever with just my thoughts and the sound of my feet hitting pavement. I can't wait for winter to end so I can actually enjoy running outside again!

Congrats on a terrific run!! I'm impressed, I've never run that far! Oh and your meals look delicious too!
I love to read magazines on the treadmill and watch tv shows. Makes the time fly!

i am SUCH a music girl. If i forget my ipod or it all the sudden dies at the gym...I will cry. I cannot have a graet workout without music. Sure I can do it, but its just not the same intensity as when I have my music. I really dont even need tv or magazines, just music and Im all good!

I LOVE chia pudding its so good, I always put chia in my oats and it makes them so nutty and delicious!!

Congrats on the 10 miler:) I love my ipod too! Although, it was fun running outside and chatting with a friend on my Sunday run.

Tip: Get a light pair of slippers with a thin sole (or even really thin soled ballet flats) and stuff 'em in your purse when you go out in heels. That way, if you find yourself walking home your feet won't be aching!

(I can barely walk in heels to begin with so this is a must for me)

Mexican eats/drinks and the Beatles?! I love it! I love history but writing that paper does sound painful! Almost as painful as your walk home!! Congrats on the 10 miler!! That's great!

wow 10 miles, amazing! I always plug my headphones into the treadmill so I can hear the tv screen. If there's nothing of interest on then I listen to my ipod. Yesterday my ipod ran out of battery and there wasn't anything on tv so I ran without anything in my ears which was surprisingly refreshing! I should try it more often!
Sounds like you had a FAB weekend! Helen xx

Mmmm...I have been so obsessed with sunflower seed butter lately! I LOVE it in cottage cheese with stevia and cinnamon. Awesome job on the long run! You're my hero - I am dead after running just a 5k. Oh my gosh I totally feel you on walking in heels. I swear I probably walked 4 miles this weekend in 20 degree weather with heels on. NO FUN! The price we have to pay to be stylish, right? Have an awesome week, beautiful!

SHOOOOO HOMES!!!! 10 miles?! You's a beast.

I love all the amazing eats here--especially the oats for lunch. I must do that this week, as I am trying not to go grocery shopping before the weekend.

I get my workout on with a magazine or text book. I prefer a magazine, obvs. Maybe once I finally get an iPod (lawd knows when), I'll LOVE that. I probably would. And I'd probably rap along to Weezy and scare my neighbors. Lucky them :D

Hope your Monday + March are off to great starts, boo! xoxoxo

I have a VERY HARD TIME working out without either my iPod or (ideally) a magazine. I only allow myself to catch up on celebrity gossip if I'm willing to sweat for it!

I honestly don't know how you made it through 10 miles on the treadmill. amazing. As for the coconut milk yogurt? I imagined a coconut type of flavor. Not the case?

I MISSED PEANUT BUTTER DAY?!!! Foodie fail. It's good to see the more responsible ladies like yourself repping it for us slackers.

Good luck with your reading and get to bed mama!

PS-You may have posted this, but how do you make your humnut sauce? The varieties I've seen are so fancy and I'm looking for simple!
