Blogging and accountability

Hi bloggies, happy Saturday! First off, hello to all you new readers!! I love reading each and every one of your comments, but I always get excited to see a new name in my inbox! Thanks for stopping by, I hope you stick around!

Today started off with the usual cereal:

Fiber One, raspberries, almond milk

I waited a few hours before starting my summer shape-up workout:

  • 12 pushups (the girly kind, on my knees)
  • 15 dumbbell double crunches
  • 12 lying tricep extensions on each side
  • 12 stability ball chest flies
  • shoulder burners
  • 15 21’s (5 lb weights)
  • 12 Arnold presses (3 lb weights)

Repeated times three, and followed by half an hour of easy ellipticalling.

While blog reading this morning, I saw several slices of millet bread, which prompted me to include it in my lunch:

Naturally More vanilla almond butter on millet bread, with an apple and some green grapes

This afternoon I hit up Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s to replenish our produce and grab some other random goodies. I got tons of fruit and other staples at WF, and got some habernero wraps, peanut butter filled pretzels, flax PB at TJ’s. I also stocked up on some new dark chocolate bars, which I’m excited to try! After putting everything away, I had some more grapes and cocoa roasted almonds as a snack:

Several episodes of The Real Housewives of New Jersey later, I wasn’t the least bit hungry. My appetite has been incredibly weird lately, and I have no idea why…the millet was strangely unappetizing at lunch, and I haven’t been craving my usual favorites. Knowing that it wouldn’t be good to skip a meal, I made a snackplate:

Roasted cauliflower and carrots, one and a half Ezekiel pitas, hummus and ketchup for dipping

Once I started eating, my appetite returned, and I had some strawberries for dessert (no surprises there):

A little later, I enjoyed half of this Salazon dark chocolate sea salt bar I picked up at WF today. I saw it on Danielle’s blog a few days ago and was excited to find it! Look how pretty the bar itself is!

It was amazing. I love sea salt in my chocolate, but I’d never had pepper in it- I was apprehensive at first, but the flavors mixed perfectly!

In other news, my no-picking goal has gone well for the past three days! Last night after dinner I snacked on a bowl of Kamut puffs, half an apple that I shared with my mom, and some TJ’s pretzel nuggets. I actually served myself each of them, which I’m happy about! Part of the reason I love blogging is that it keeps me accountable. Maybe just sharing my habit is exactly what I needed to kick it for good!

Tonight’s agenda includes TV watching, Google reading, and a very early bedtime- I have a hunch my lack of appetite and all around lethargic feel might have something to do with my massive sleep deficit! Hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend!

How do you like your chocolate? Milk, dark, with nuts, with fruit, with caramel, plain? I like trying exotic flavors, but I’m not a big fan of things in my chocolate…smooth is the best!

Do you find that blogging keeps you accountable? Does it encourage you to make healthier choices, or to keep your health in mind instead of your size?

I'm drooling at those fresh fruit shots. Yum!
Sometimes I find I'm not hungry until I start eating, too. Strange, but oh well? lol. And I keep seeing cocoa roasted almonds, but have yet to try any. Need to fix that, stat!
I'm not a huge choco fan unless it's got either mint, coconut, or nuts. And I think blogging helps keep me accountable, but at the same time I also remember to eat intuitively than what "looks better for the blog." Still getting the hang of it, but it's comin' ;)

I guess I could be considered a relatively new reader! :)

How do you like your chocolate?

I'm the exact opposite of you! Haha - the more junk in my chocolate the better! I love dark chocolate with nuts, seeds, caramel, pretzel, dried fruit, exotic flavors, ginger, crispy stuff, waffle, etc. Maybe some chocolate company will come up with a bar that has EVERYTHING in it - like a super duper trailmix dark chocolate bar!! *falls into a dream..mmmm*

Do you find that blogging keeps you accountable?

It encourages me to make meals that are colorful and nutritious. I wouldn't have minded eating broccoli and spinach all day long, but that gets boring in pictures. Personally, my blog's aim is a way to get myself to think "healthy" rather than to think "thin". I want to transform my fear/obsession with food into a healthy, loving relationship!

I like my chocolate dark. Anything else is just a bonus but I love the simplicity and awesome bitter taste.

Well, since I don't blog everything, I don't feel much more accountable, but overall blogging shows me how important it is to take care of my overall health and it's so inspiring to see people fitting it into their day.

I'm also with you on the strange appetite- no idea what's going on with mine!

Glad to hear that breaking your picking habit is still going well, girl! Blogging can definitely be a great way to stay accountable, or even to become more aware of bad habits that you didn't know you had. I know there've been several occasions where I read something on someone's blog only to realize that I have the same habit and that I need to do something about it. And while it doesn't necessarily make me make healthier choices, it DOES continually remind me to keep health in mind and introduces me to so many new and creative meal ideas :)

As for chocolate, I definitely love it dark, and what I like in it depends on my mood. Sometimes I like some fruit/nut, and sometimes I just want the smooth experience :)

Hope you're having a great night, girl!

Hi!
mmmmm... chocolate! A few months ago I ordered a chocolate bar off of www.chocomize.com and you create your own bar! I did dark choc., sunflower seeds, sea salt, and caramel drops. It was fabulous!! The sea salt and caramel together were amazing!!

So wish we had a TJ's. The closest one is an hour away

That chocolate looks like a work of art - I'd almost be hard-pressed to eat it! (Yeah right...I'd stand in awe of it for a whole two minutes before scarfing that sucker...) My favorite chocolate is anything with nuts in it. I don't care what kind of nuts - just throw 'em in some chocolate and I'm happy! (Dude. Total TWSS right there!)

Blogging definitely keeps me accountable in a sense of pushing me to try out new, healthy foods and not to settle for junky things; it also helps me look at the emotional side of life in a very strange, roundabout way. Things come into a new perspective as I think about how to write them into my blog. It's definitely beneficial in a ton of ways - especially the wonderful community of supportive readers! (On that note, thank you so much for stopping by my blog! Glad to have found yours as well!)

I love chocolate with fruit and nuts. I once had the Cadbury Fruit and Nut bar from Canada, and it was so rich it tasted like hot chocolate. That salt and pepper one is beautiful, and would be fun to try.

I love mint chocolate and chocolate with almonds. I've never tried it with sea salt though! I'm sure that would be really great :)

I actually started blogging again after taking a long break because I felt like I needed to be reminded about how much I love food. I was working and neglecting my favorite eats so I wanted to make sure I was a happier individual by fueling myself well. Working in the film industry means that sometimes I just can't seem to feed myself the way I love to and now I try to cook more often and fit in trips to the farmers market whenever possible. I even make things just so I can freeze them for the future sometimes if I know I will be busy on set for a few weeks. The blog keeps me accountable when I want it to but really it is just an outlet for me to ramble about delicious eats.

It is great that you feel like writing the goals on here is really helping!

The dark chocolate sounds perfect for me cause I used to love the lindt dk chocolate with sea salt. I will have to look out for it at the local WF's! I am also typically just a dark chocolate fan, especially that smooth dark chocolate by endangered species...yum!

I like my chocolate with nuts -- actually, heath bar is my favorite kind of chocolate. Have you tried Trader Joe's gluten free cranberry maple nut granola? It's in the back of the store in Wayne. It is SO AWESOME! One of my favorite granolas.

I like blogging because it's like a journal. When I was a little girl, I used to keep journals, so my blog is my grown-up journal. It helps me appreciate all of the wonderful things in life, and I like to be able to look back and remember all the special things that I've experienced.

I've been having some appetite troubles too and I suspect it is related to the weather: the heat and humidity just make me want to eat ice cubes and frozen fruit for every mail. I actually felt sick after having a wrap for dinner tonight! Geez louise.

I love your "no picking" challenge: I do the same thing and what it comes down to is a deep seated belief that I either deserve to punish myself (by bingeing) or to not enjoy my food. That I am undeserving of having a healthy, fun relationship with food. I'm glad you've started this challenge; I've been secretly joining you on it!

Dark chocolate with nuts is definitely my favorite! I also love some good old peanut butter m&ms. I have definitely noticed a positive change in my eating ever since entering the blog world. I find that I place more of an emphasis on eating real/healthy foods rather than worrying about fat/carb content. Calories is still somewhat of an issue for me but I'm working on it. Oh and I'm so glad your no-picking goal is working out!

I know that some of my readers care about me, and I have their comments in the back of my head, so sometimes, that helps me make the wiser choices.
I love how that chocolate looks, yum. I adore all kinds of chocolate :D

Blogging keeps me pretty inline as far as eating well. I know that if I don't plan on eating much that some one will say something, so I go ahead and make a bigger portion, etc... It is still a little weird to present to 'the world' what I am eating, but it has helped to keep me healthy and strong. Not to mention how inspirational you all have been for me! :)

I'd love to try that chocolate! I love sea salt with anything. A little salt can make anything better. I think one of my all time favorite chocolates is Toblerone. So good! Have a good Sunday!

Glad to hear you're on track with your goals! I'm like you, I prefer my chocolate smooth because I don't like to chew it, I just like to let it melt in my mouth (TWSS). But I think my favorite kind of chocolate is dark chocolate with mint and the second best choice is dark with orange. Yum...

I am obsessed with cadbury's milk chocolate, i eat it almost every day!

I love almonds in chocolate. Or any combo of mint and chocolate!

I'm so glad your no picking goal is going well! I think I would eat healthily regardless of blogging, but it has definitely motivated me to try new foods and not worry so much about staying within a calorie limit.

Anna said...

Blogging definitely encourages me to vary my meals. If I wasn't posting my meals on the internet, I would probably eat the same thing day after day for lunch and dinner...I'm a creature of habit like that!

My appetite has been weird lately too.. Maybe it's the hot weather?
Blogging for sure helps me stay accountable.. for the most part. Because I mean, if we don't WANT to blog about something, we don't HAVE to but I would kind of feel like I was deceiving people? And I know this community is not exactly judgmental.
LOVE all kinds of chocolate.. but recently I have been obsessed with this one type of dark chocolate. OMG. I could eat my weight in it.
Love you!

Hells yes. I don't want to let people down, especially the ones that have been reading since the beginning.

Wow, where did you find NM vanilla almond butter? I WANT IT!!!! Yes, blogging Definitely helps hold me accountable. I am so much more conscious about the choices I make.

Jennifer said...

OMG, can I just say that I should not have come to your blog hungry? I am starving right now and now I am drooling over these pics lol! I have to try that chocolate next time I go to WF.

I actually just wrote a whole article (haven't posted yet) about how blogging keeps me accountable! I feel like it's almost like having to walk into a crowd every day and tell them exactly what you ate and how you worked out. When temptation strikes (and I live close to Mcdonalds so it often does) I always think "I would eat these fries and then post about it on my blog?" if the answer is no, I pick something else!

I'm with you on the chocolate- smooth IS best. Dark and intense, just the way I like it!
I do find that the blog keeps me accountable, and it also helps me see how important it is to feed my body. It takes a lot of food to keep going and the fact that there are other people who are feeding their bodies the fuel it needs shows me that not only is it important for me to do the same, but that it is OKAY for me to do so.
I hear ya on the weird stomach thingy. The heat does CRAZY things to my appetite and cravings! Looks like you are handling it well though. I know it is tempting to just not eat when you are not hungry but you aren't letting yourself do this.
Oh, and the chocolate bar is so pretty! Love it!

Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg said...

That chocolate bar is beautiful!! I'm like you-- love salted chocolate, but have never tried pepper. Now I want to find some!

Hope you had a great weekend, girl!

sophia said...

I prefer chocolate with nuts in there...esp almonds, macadamia, or hazelnuts. I like all chocolates, except those really really intense dark ones. Love the pepper in the chocolate though...i love unique chocolates like that!

Anonymous said...

you've gotta try dark chocolate with red chili pepper...it is UHHH-MAZING! My absolute favorite.

So glad your no picking is going well! I am working on it also!

fittingbackin said...

I'm all for milk chocolate, but in truth I don't push away from any chocolate!!

I think blogging definitely helps me stay accountable!

Hope you're having a great day, girl!

so glad the picking situ is improved and that blogging helps! wonderful!

if anything, i dont need to be held more accountable..i put so much pressure on myself that blogging can actually add to that

in many ways i regret telling the world about my show b/c honestly, after an 18 hr day and a move, the last thing i want to do is tell 4000 friends and daily readers that oh yeah, here's how i did. i mean, it's fine b/c i did fine but what if i did like crap. would i really want to post that? no. So that's why it's like over accountability for me...not sure how i will handle future shows re the blog.

Great question and i loved what you had to say about guest posts/health stories. totally played out and boring. omg, agree.

Gracie @ Girl Meets Health said...

Blogging has definitely held me accountable in the sense that I eat way more fruits and veggies than I did before. I mean, I always ate them, but now I make sure to get my 5+ servings in each day...and that can only be a good thing!
