It was definitely a bit toasty out today…
I’ll take it. Call me crazy, but I’d rather boil than freeze. I always prefer sweltering heat to bitter cold!
Given the ridiculous temps this morning, I kept the workout inside and did my No More Trouble Zones DVD. The arms circuit is insane…I’m always in pain washing my hair the next day!
I had an apple pre-workout, and the usual bowl of cereal afterwards. This bowl contained Nature’s Path SmartBran, almond milk and the biggest blackberries I’ve ever seen, which my parents picked up from a farmer’s roadside stand on their way back from the shore yesterday.
At the hospital today, I helped out in the OB/GYN clinic, which provides inexpensive prenatal care to low-income women. It was an eye-opening experience, to say the least. I can’t discuss much, but just the ages of some of the girls made me want to cry. This whole internship is making me realize how fortunate I am to have my health, as well as parents who love and support me through everything.
For lunch, I had overnight oats containing a mashed banana, a splash of almond milk, raw oats, a scoop of Sun Warrior vanilla protein powder, a spoonful of almond butter and sliced blackberries. On the side, I had a deliciously juicy unpictured peach, also from the New Jersey farmstand.
When I got home, I dug into a bag of baby carrots and hummus, plus some cherries:
For dinner, I met up with my good friend Mikey for sushi. He’s been in Spain visiting his extended family for the past month, so it was great to see him and catch up. As usual, we split an unpictured order of edamame and a huge platter of sashimi:
I also had some miso soup and an unpictured side salad with ginger dressing.
I drove home blasting old school Counting Crows and smelling the clean summer air. Certain CDs always remind me of summer- Counting Crows’ August and Everything After, Augustana’s Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt, and Blink-182’s Enema of the State. Happiness.
Dessert when I got home was a huge bowl of strawberries:
Hope you all have a wonderful hump day!
What music reminds you of summer?
Do you have any meal traditions you share with friends or family? Mikey and I always get sashimi, and my friend Jillian and I love our Cosi dinner dates!

oh-my-god. Sashimi, my FAVE!
Sundays on the boat remind me of summer. The smell of charcoal and wind in your face. To me, that is summer. I need to live it up before it's gone.
Overnight oats for lunch! Love it :) I have overnight oats for dinner last night and it was wonderful. I would probably appreciate it more if we had your kind of weather over here... it feels like anything but summer! Having to wear sweaters in July? Uhm... no. If you have any nice weather to spare, please package it up and send it my way :)
It's not really a meal, per say, but every morning, me and my dad split a French Press of coffee, and I always get the bigger half ;) We've been doing it forever now; I can't really imagine starting the day any other way.
loveee counting crows! third eye blind always reminds me of summer<3
Oh it's sweltering here, too. I cannot stand the heat! Except when I'm poolside or beachin' it! Of course! Summer to me is being out on the boat with friends and just relaxing, enjoying good friends and fam! Overnight oats for lunch is an amazing idea! Stealing it sometime, hope you don't mind :)
Have a great night!
Meg
Ahh I'm trying no more trouble zones tomorrow morning! I'd like a little burning sensation in my arms. I was just thinking today how it's terrible that anyone should have a baby when they're not ready.
Anyway, your internship sounds like a great opportunity. I'm currently reading this because our AC isn't working and it's too hot to sleep. Effff.
I second your statement! i would much rather be hot hot hot and melting than a solid block of ice. ;)
Great eats as usual. I love SHEL especially in the summer. Listen to the latest and greatest blueberry rubberband.
105 is nothing :) The day we moved out of Phx it was 116-117F while loading our truck. Oh the memories. THANK GOD we are outta there! Dry heat my ass! hot is hot!
Ob/gyb clinics...oh the things you see in them. I am a lactation educator and I have helped 13 yr old girls breastfeed their new babies. Yes. Young. Very very young. And usually in those situ's the mother, the baby, both have health issues and there is enough skeletons in the closet to wake the dead. I am sure youve seen a few sights. God bless healthcare workers!
Have a beautiful nite, Gabriela!
Goodness, it was warm out! It's always so hard to get outside and move when it's that hot! Your Ob?GYN clinic sounds like a very rewarding place to work.
Ahhh! 105 is sooo hot! We get to usually a maximum of 90 here in Vancouver and that;s plenty hot enough for me :) That sashimi looks so yummy :)
xoxoxox
It is sooo hot here, too! Hate it unless I'm at a pool!
Whew! That is hot-- but yep, I'd much rather be hot than cold too!
The Beach Boys, Van Morrison, and Jimmy Cliff always remind me of summer :-)
I'll take sweltering heat over the cold too! I hate winter!
Jack Johnson is perfect summer music! His songs always reminds me of summer days on the beach.
Oh! I hate when I work out my arms and it hurts when I wash my hair!!
"The Way" by Fastball always reminds me of summer! Love that song.
that is sad. What's difficult is remembering how lucky we are even when we AREN'T surrounded by those less fortunate.
Jack's Mannequin "Holiday from Real" is my summer jam.
I definitely prefer hot over cold as well! And your internship sounds so cool. I always try to remind myself how lucky I am to be healthy!
Sadly I don't think I have any meal traditions.. which means I need to create some, asap!!
that is a pretty bowl of sashimi! it's so freaking hot out here too! ughhh. watermelon makes me think of summer. and corn on the cob.
Any Coldplay CD, Counting Crows, Indigo Girls (haha), and Tom Petty!
those unpictured side salads with ginger dressing = SO GOOD! no matter what restaurant!
I would also MUCH rather be too hot than too cold! One of my friend's and I always meet at Panera whenever we have lunch together. When we plan our lunch we don't even have to say what restaurant - our convo is like: "Want to do lunch tomorrow?" "Sure, what time, noon?" "See ya then" and we just show up :)
It is a hot summer! I can't seem to get enough to drink! Chuggin that water :)
oh yeah! it was 101 on my thermom yesterday in my car! its so freakin hot! i do agree with you about boling rather than being cold though!! I mean I dont really want to be in EITHER extreme but if I had to choose one, the heat and just stay in air conditioning all day! LOL
that sashimi looks so good, but I read your tweet that you got sick from it?! ah if thats true, then i hope you are feeling better!
I'm with you - I'll take boiling over freezing any day. In fact, I'm a little jealous of your sweltering temps.
Anything Jack Johnson reminds me of summer - it just sounds like he's playing on a beach.
My family grills - anything grilled is a food tradition for us!
I think I am the opposite...hate the hot hot heat so much! I do get cold pretty easily too though...so I just like the middle ground I guess...
I don't know why but your miso soup just really got me craving some.
Summer music...the almost famous soundtrack reminds me of a high school summer at my house on mv...soo fun!
I don't have meal traditions per se, but my sis and I always go to cafe gitane downtown...pretty much every time we are in nyc together. I also go to two boots for the vegan slice with my friend chrissy a lot.
I am the exact opposite way about weather. I would rather it be the dead of winter because (a) I can warm myself up with running, blankets, hot baths, and cocoa, and (b) I think it's prettier, and less people are outdoors! sounds like you're having a super fun summer -- I do kind of miss summer in the suburbs a wee bit.
I used to always go out to dinner with my mom's boyfriend on Wednesdays. No other dining traditions!
You lunch of overnight oats look great!
In our family we grew up with family dinners, which we are getting ready to have a big one tonight. My dad loves to grill, so grilling is something we all love to do when together ; )
Those blackberries look delicious!
I've been thinking about getting the No More Trouble Zone DVD for a while, and I think you might have just convinced me to take the plunge. I'm in need of a good soreness-inducing workout!
I used to love blink 182! I love listening to Tricot Machine in the summer.
There is an amazing little French bistro that my best friend and I go to when we get a chance to get together. They have the most wonderful French onion soup ever!
I hope you're having a wonderful da
You know what I wish? That we could have a weekly sushi date!
No More Trouble Zones scares me. I'd do it, but it wouldn't be pretty, I'm sure.
Faaave summer music is Jack Johnson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ben Folds and Ella Fitzgerald. OK, they are actually just my favorites, period (minus Weezy, obvs.).
Hm, I don't think I have any meal rituals with people anymore! Must work on that.
Hope your day is wonderful, lovebug! xoxoxo
PS Thanks again for the recipe!
holy high temps!!! glad im outta there!
