Hello my darlings, I’ve missed you! It’s been a whirlwind of a holiday weekend, and I’ve loved every minute of it. Let’s backtrack to Friday, shall we?
Late morning, I took the train to New York to pick up the keys to my new apartment. Eeek, so excited! I’ll show you pictures when I head back up to move in this weekend, but I got majorly lucky on this place- three more people applied in the 24 hours it took them to process my app. I definitely lucked out with one of the (very) few underpriced NYC apartments…
For dinner that evening, I met up with Mike at a tapas restaurant near the NYU campus. It was a tiny hole in the wall place with AMAZING food:
Fresh bread and olive oil with marinated olives
Sopa de gazpacho...I’ve never had gazpacho with croutons, but I never say no to more carbs
Langostinos a la Planca- grilled prawns. They’re looking at you!
Pulpo a la Gallega- octopus with olive oil, paprika and sea salt. This was absolutely delicious. As weird as it sounds, the suckers are the most tender and flavorful part!
Chocolate mousse cake for dessert
I know I’m a bit of a weirdo; the thought of eating meat grosses me out, but I have no problem eating octopus suckers or digging shrimp meat out of its head. No matter how vegan I get, I’ll never be able to give up seafood! I’m happy with my high-vegan pescatarian ways J
After dinner, we strolled over to Chelsea for the evening, stopping at Cocoa V along the way. It’s a small vegan chocolate shop and wine bar owned by the same people as Blossom. The selection was incredible!
While Mike bought some truffles for his mom, I snagged a dog-shaped chocolate tangerine lollipop as a second dessert (my excuse is that Mike hogged the chocolate mousse cake). Cute and tasty.
We spent the rest of the night bar-hopping before I headed back to my apartment to sleep in a comforter on the hardwood floor. Not exactly the most comfortable situation, but I was just excited to be there!
The next morning we were headed to Long Island for an all-day party! We were some of the first people there, so the boys set up some tents while we waited for the others to arrive.
The rest of the day was a ton of fun- we hung out by the pool, played ridiculous games, and feasted on the amazing surf and turf spread our host’s mom laid out for us. I slacked in the picture department, but did manage to get a few shots:
Swimmin’
Watching fireworks
Birthday ice cream cake. It's been YEARS since I had this stuff, and it was freaking delicious.
I’m generally used to playing paparazzi with my friends, but this weekend it felt good to put the camera away and focus on living in the moment, rather than capturing it. Pictures are great to remind you of good times, but I also believe that the best memories are the ones you don’t need a camera to remember.
Sunday, the blinding sun and heat blaring through the tents woke us up early. We feasted on baked goods and lazed around for a while before I headed back into the city to get my train home. July 4th is my brother’s birthday, and I wanted to make it back in time for his celebration! In honor of his 24th, he had a barbeque with all his friends that included plenty of hot dogs, cookie cake and beer pong in the pool on our inflatable table. Again, I didn’t snap any pictures, but it was a nice, low-key way to end the weekend!
A few other random eats:
Fiber One and raspberries
Tomato and Sabra on Ezekiel, plus strawberries, blackberries and almonds for the train
Tofu sammie from an NY deli
Huge soft pretzel from a hot dog stand on Long Island
Vanilla protein shake with Sun Warrior, almond milk, ice, vanilla extract and a nanner
I hope you all had a fantastic holiday weekend too! I’ve been catching up on the reader and I know at least a few of you had some fun plans! And of course, the best part of a long weekend is the short week that follows. Enjoy J
Are you a fan of seafood? If so, what’s your favorite? I love everything except clams, mussels and oysters, but if I had to choose an absolute favorite, it would probably be shrimp, scallops and tuna steak.
Besides food pictures, are you camera-happy? Is anyone else the unofficial photographer among their friends?

I LOVE seafood! It's definitely my favorite form of meat. But, like you, I'm not a fan of clams, mussels, or oysters :/ Slimy + chewy = yuck!
I do tend to be camera-happy when I'm with my friends (they know I ALWAYS have a camera on me, haha), but every once in a while I like to take the night off. Sometimes taking pictures takes away from the fun being had, you know??
It looks like you had a fab weekend!! Wish you weren't going back to NY though, booo :(
Aw I haven't had ice-cream cake in FOREVER!!! I prefer cookie cakes myself, though. :)
And I have never liked seafood. When I was little, I would eat fried shrimp if I could drown it all in ketchup, haha.
That looks like such a fun weekend! All of those tapas dishes-- yum!
I'm the same way-- I don't miss meat at all, but seafood...sigh. I miss it so much! (and still indulge occasionally!)
I am OBSESSED with ice cream cake! I have one every year for my bday. Looks like you had a great weekend!
Congrats on the apartment! I can't wait to see the pics. I could live off of seafood. I don't even thing I could narrow down my favorite. My least favorite would have to be raw oysters though. I tried them a few months ago and was not a fan. :)
Sounds like an awesome weekend!!! I will seriously eat/try any seafood, I love it all and I am definitely the photographer among my friends!
Congrats on the apartment, it sounds like a great find. Have a great week girl!
Great weekend! I bet it was hot in NYC too! Congrats on the new apt. I love seafood, especially shrimp! I do like mussels, but only from a restaurant where they are steamed in a ton of garlic and butter and served with bread for dipping.
Looks like you had a great weekend! I go through phases with my camera when I am with friends, sometimes I just like being with them...but pictures are nice to look back on!
And congrats on the apt!!!!
OMG, I so had that tent when I was little. HAH!Congrats on the apt!!
Icecream cake is right up there with cookie cake - the bomb! But I have it rarely!
I'm very much the unofficial photographer - LOVE IT! I also love seafood - shrimp & fish are faves (not huge on scallops or oysters!)
congrats on the apartment! i bet you are super excited to be getting situated.
Looks like a lovely weekend. I have never had octopus before. What's it like, or is it sort of in a class of its' own?
I am always taking pictures, too. Whenever I don't show up with my camera it's sort of like "where's your camera? oh - go get it!" hah. I just come back with "well, did you invite me or my camera?" ;) All in good fun, though. (...I hope? haha)
Congrats on the apartment! That's so great that you got such a deal! :)
I totally agree - I could never cut seafood out of my diet (well, except for scallops, clams, oysters and mussels because apparently I'm allergic to them)! I love salmon way too much!
I rarely take pictures when I'm with my friends, and sometimes I wish I did! But I really do prefer to live the memories rather than to capture them.
new APT in NYC!? damn girl! SO jealous? Mind if I crash on your couch!? haha Glad you had a good weekend! :)

LOVE seafood - and haha I agree about the octopus tentacles! My mom thinks I'm so weird.
Need any help moving into the city dollface?
I loooove seafood! My favorite is lobster and scallops. So darn good.
New apartment?! So exciting! And I am definitely the official photographer of my friends. Haha I am working on setting down the camera a bit though! Glad you had a great weekend love!
girl i LOVEEE me some seafood!!! :)
i LOVE grilled salmon :)
and i love ice cream cake too!!
that sounds like an amazing 4th of july weekend girl. i am so glad you had a great one!
love you gorgeous!
Can't wait to see the new apartment! Are you still going to be downtown?
The food looks amazing btw! :)
"this weekend it felt good to put the camera away and focus on living in the moment, rather than capturing it. "--OMG this is so perfect. The other day I was watching Skylar doing something and rather than just watching her, I was trying to photograph her b/c I thought it would be cute but it killed the moment, she stopped doing it, I got no useable pics and it would have just been better undocumented on film but with a mental note made. I do this frequently with food, life, and i am sick of it! Toting my camera to the mall to take a pic of the mall to put it on the blog?! For who? My readers? What about me. Yes girl, I know. It's awesome to put it away and I plan to do more of that.
Also your comment to me/mind reading..commenting, keeping up, etc..it's TOO MUCH! I just cant anymore and no one should. We should all cut ourselves some slack, live life and have fun.
speaking of which, vegan choco shop, New apt?!?!! omg congrats! and all your fun times in this post...so happy for you!
You're comng back to NY already!? Yay! Let's play. And go get more ice cream.
I used to be the official photographer of my friends but then I went to Nicaragua and we werent allowed to use our cameras the whole week we were working on the school so I got kind of out of the habit, and ever since then I havent been a camera happy girl.
Congrats on your apartment! I think I missed that somewhere along the way.
I am a fan of seafood. I love tuna steak, salmon, and shrimp best. I always forget my camera so I'm not a very good photographer.
omg! i'm definitely the unofficial photographer!
glad you had an awesome 4th pretty girl! xox
oh my goodness, i don't even know where to begin. all your foodie pics look so GOOD! but the cake really...uh...takes the cake. lol.
i really love seared scallops and i could eat my weight in shrimp. most fish too. the only time i don't like seafood is when it's overdone and chewy. BLECH.
happy tuesday!
I'm excited to see pics of your new place! Interested to see what's available in NYC coming from DC and my hometown being 45 mins outside of NY.
Looks like a fun weekend, and Cocoa V is too cute!
Congrats on the apt! I want to see it! Your seafood dinner looks great! I love lobster, crab, shrimp...pretty much everything :)
Congrats on the great new NYC apartment. I seriously miss that city soooo much. I too had to sleep on the hard floor last weekend when we moved into our new apt and had yet to get the bed!
Sounds and looks like such a wonderful weekend. I don't always bring out the camera either and let others do it often.
i LOVE seafood - i could give up meat, but could never give up mah fishies. my friends get mad at me because i never take pictures, so i want to start trying more to preserve memories.
Glad you had such a stellar long weekend! Sounds like lots of fun, especially them pool part. :)
I love your seafood meal. Seafood doesn't gross me out and I love ti, but unfortunately I am allergic to true mollusks (oysters, clams, mussels) so I have to be careful. I love shrimp and fresh fish. When you're on a lake or beach and you dine at a restaurant that gets their fish freshly caught...there aren't many meals better than that. Nom!
Have a great week my dear. Can't wait till you're back in the city for real and we can have some playtime!
I love fish but could go either way with sea food. I do like crab meat on occasion though. I try to be the photographer but I always forget in the end! Oh well, I suppose there are worse things. I hope you have a fantastic day and congrats again in the apartment! :)
HOLY BLOG MAKEOVER! When did this happen?! I feel so behind!! It's beautiful, my love, just like it's author :)
Ah, seafood is one reason I could NEVER go veg -- I just adore it. Shrimp, calamari (fried, gotta be fried) lobster, tuna, I love 'em all!
Way to go with the cake, girl. I'm sure you were in chocolate HEAVEN!!!! I'm so proud of you for proving to yourself that you CAN have your cake and eat it too (bad pun) and be happier for it. You light up my life!
LOVE YOU, G!
Congratulations on your new abode! Sounds like a fantastic weekend. Ahh, seafood is awesomeness. I love it all, but some favorites are halibut, kippered salmon, and crab cakes. And yes, ever since I've been blogging, I've become the "photographer" at family events! It's a role I'll gladly take on!
i was just in the city and thought about how cool/exciting it would be to live there!! so jealous of you! you will never be bored thats for sure :)
lately the thought of meat has really just been grossing me out..but seafood is always welcome :) mm love that choc. mousse cake.
ps. next time your in nyc you have to try Ruby Foo's (if you haven't already) - its my FAVORITE restaurant in the whole wide world.
Congrats on the apartment!! Sounds like you had a great weekend love! I definitely slacked in the picture department too but sometimes you just need a break.
Ice cream cake is the BOMB!!!
I looove seafood too but I'm sure if I have a favorite. Oh wait, calamari. LOVE it.
Love you!
awwww you were on strong island and didn't even call me! haha i keeed :) i'm pretty sure you need to have an apartment warming partAY girl ;)
those shrimpies look HUGE and delicious!! glad you had such a fun holiday weekend :) it is nice sometimes to just give the camera the backburner for a while!
I have one friend (from Long Island, actually) who is a photo fiend. It's always exciting (and kind of nerve wracking) to wake up in the morning and see what you've been tagged in. Some things may be better left unrecorded, but at least they're worth a laugh or two.
I miss you girl!!!!!!!! U have been so busy and so have I!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So funny how your brothers girlfriend asked you to be in the wedding, Im sure she is thrilled to have you as a bridesmaid!!!
CONGRATS on finding a place in NYC !! I was thinking of you and hoping you would, yay! Glad that is settled and no stress about that now! Love ya girl and glad you had a wonderful 4th!
Icecream cake is my fave ever!!!!!!!!
