I'm very glad to be snowed in at my parents' house, rather than in my tiny NYC apartment. Their TV channels are way better ;)
Last night before bed, I skimmed through Thrive, which I started over the summer but kind of forgot about.
I think that Brendan Brazier had a great philosophy on food as fuel, and his recipes are some of the cleanest, most energy-dense creations I've come across. It really motivated me to reintroduce some forgotten favorites into my diet, as well as to experiment with more superfoods.
For breakfast, I poured myself a bowl of Uncle Sam cereal, topped with a sliced banana and almond milk.
(I just Googled Uncle Sam and discovered that it's been around since 1908. How's that for staying power? Great ingredient list, too!)
Post-breakfast, I headed out to my garage for an elliptical session. Funny enough, I actually inhaled a fuzzy from the chenille gloves I was wearing, and spent a good 15 minutes trying to cough it out. When that didn't work, I resorted to chugging a few glasses of water until it went down. The hazards of winter workout gear!
After hacking my throat raw, I wanted something cool and fresh for lunch.
Four Fruit Smoothie
- one sliced banana
- one orange, torn into segments
- about 1 cup cantaloupe chunks
- one chopped apple
- about 2 cups of fresh spinach
- 1/4 cup Living Harvest hemp protein
- 2 T ground flaxseed meal
- 1 cup almond milk
- 2 packets Truvia (more to mask the taste of the hemp than for sweetness!)
This made two twenty-ounce glasses- wow! I drank one and put the other in the fridge for a snack this afternoon.
I also had a bowl of roasted veggies and sweet potato casserole, left over from Christmas.
What is your favorite health or nutrition related book?

I'm with ya on the lazy afternoon! LOVING having this week off :)
Enjoy the laziness! ;)
Oh man - that's so tough! I don't know if I have yet discovered my favorite health or nutrition related book! Definitely not health related, but one of my favorite foodie books is 'No Reservations' by Bourdain - it's actually the antithesis of health, but a great read nonetheless.
I laughed at you trying to "hack up the fuzzy"! My favorite books have got to be "Eat to Live" and "Eat For Health" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. "Thrive" is a close second, and I haven't even finished reading it yet. I need to add that to my list of required reading this year.
Even though I'm snowed in a Green Monster sounds really good right now! Too bad I'm out of spinach and not driving to the grocery store in 1 foot of snow! ;]
I love lazy days- I need to soak them up as much as possible before I have to student teach. And lets me honest, Id be lying if I said I wasnt still in bed right now...breakfast oats in bed? Yes please!

I have some Uncle Sam in my cupboard right now! Though I have yet to try it.
I REALLY want to read that book. About to go order it on Amazon ;)
I have a lazy afternoon here too! I got my workout and errands done, so it is lunch and movie time :)
I enjoyed Skinny Bitch and I'm currently reading In Defense of Food by Micheal Pollan. So far so good! :)
i love winter lazy days.... when it is so cold outside i just love being lazy and don't even feel bad about it
Loving lazy afternoons! That's what I'm off to do! Woohoo!
Yay for snow! We got LOTS, started Christmas night and lasted until yesterday afternoon.. so pretty!
I've been snowed in since yesterday and I have been using it as an excuse to watch movies all day. Thrive is an awesome book, especially for vegans who are active. My favorites are skinny bitch, the kind diet and integrative nutrition. Enjoy your snow day!
dang that is a lottttt of snow! I havent really read any nutrition books now that I think about it! I definitely should get on that though!
the snow is so pretty! we got some flurries in SC but they didn't really stick.
I love, love, love "The Kind Diet" by Alicia Silverstone... and I just bought my BF a copy of "Veggie Burgers Every Which Way" that I cannot WAIT to tie into!
I literally laughed when you mentioned inhaling a fuzzy from your glove, haha! I'm glad you got it out though...those little things that get caught in your throat are just SO obnoxious! Ack! It's not quite that much of a winter wonderland here right now, only a few inches if that. Still beautiful though! Enjoy your book!
I have Thrive on the way and am very excited to start reading it!
I also had a question for you, I saw your monthly goal lists and really like the idea- since I am a person that loves making both lists and goals haha, and wondered if it would be ok with you if I copied your idea?

I love the Thrive book! Also...your pic of the snowy weather looks just like where I am in upstate NY. It is frigid out there :)
Thrive sounds like such a good read! I haven't really read many nutrition-related books lately... but I do have a gift certificate to a bookstore just waiting to be used!
The snow looks so beautiful, doesn't it? It's been the perfect day for reading on the couch.
im typing this from the air and free inflight wifi but i love brendan and his books! fave book that's health oriented...hmm, good question...i will ponder that one, but i have both brendan's books and i dig em! :)
oooohhhh both smoothie and casserole sound YUMMY!! Hope you had a great Christmas!
:D
You're right-- it does suck being snowed in when you're in a tiny NYC apartment-- trust me I know! lol
I like any vegan/vegetarian based books.
I just some brand new flavors of Uncle Sam that I'm pretty stoked about! Although, I've actually never tried the regular kind haha
I've read so many health books. I really like what Mark Bittman has to say in "Food Matters." His food philosophy is very similar to mine: eat a lot of plants, you don't necessarily need to go vegetarian, but try to support local farmers in your food choices
i loooved thrive. im currently reading the engine 2 diet and its also good. thrive is still one of my faves though.
